The owners of Mastiffs know how important the choice of a breeder is. Breeders should be knowledgeable to produce sound puppies and take care of them during their first weeks of life. Breeding Mastiffs is a difficult task. These dogs often experience health problems such as hip and elbow dysplasia. These conditions are inherited in Mastiffs and therefore, breeding of affected dogs is not allowed. The Dogue de Bordeaux suffers from hip dysplasia more than some other Mastiffs. Besides, Dogue de Bordeaux dams have a broad chest and can harm the newly born.
Neapolitan Mastiffs also have specific problems related to breeding. The majority of Neapolitan Mastiff owners seem to reside in the country of its origin, Italy. It is not readily available in other countries such as Australia or France. Eastern Europe also experiences the shortage of good breeding lines. The fault lies partly with the late recognition of the Neapolitan Mastiff by major canine clubs and other organizations. The FCI (Federation Cynologie International) was among the first that registered the dog in 1949.
On the whole, all Mastiffs experience delivery problems. Dyctocia, another name for this condition, is of frequent occurrence in large-headed breeds of dog. Cesarean sections are often needed during Mastiff whelping.

Mastiff breeders should carefully consider the choice of the sire/dam for a breeding. It is better to choose dogs with notable pedigrees and those that have successfully participated in show rings and other activities. Parent dogs should be tested for hip and elbow dysplasia, and some other diseases. The list of health problems and recommended tests can be obtained in a local or national breed club.
Puppies should be well-socialized and vaccinated. At the time when a Mastiff puppy is ready to leave its mother for a new home, it must be no younger than 1.5-2 months old. It is the breeder's right to choose future owners at his own discretion. People who are eager to buy Mastiffs should explain their motives for acquiring a dog and share with you their plans on the issue of the dog's future.
