Mastiffs - Pictures - Physical Appearance
Mastiffs are working dogs that can be used in weight pulling, sledding, tracking, hunting, and are valued highly as good guard dogs. They are massive, strong, and heavy-boned. The muzzle is relatively long with scissors or pincer bite in Neapolitan Mastiffs, undershot bite in the Dogue de Bordeaux and the English Mastiff.
Double coat is short and lies closely to the body. Ears in Neapolitan Mastiffs are usually cropped, whereas in English Mastiffs and Dogue de Bordeaux they are short lying closely to the temples. Dark eyes are of medium size. The Neapolitan Mastiff shows a considerable jaw. Both English Mastiffs and Dogue de Bordeaux have a mask.

Mastiffs should show neither excessive curiosity, nor aggressiveness towards strangers. These dogs are devoted companions and in fact, are rather dependent on their owners. Mastiffs follow their masters whenever s/he stands up. They seem to be always in need of their owners' contact.
Mastiffs are believed to be a one-man dog. They accept other family members including children. Best relationships between Mastiffs and children are those that have been developed from a Mastiff's early age. Young children should be taught how to interact with large dogs.
Life Expectancy: 8-12 years
Major Health Concerns: Hip and elbow dysplasia, eye problems, obesity, delivery difficulties.
Mastiffs are not always good with other pets. You will hardly ever see them playing with other dogs all the more with same sex ones. These giants of the canine world are rather dominant and will not let anyone rule them. However, some Mastiffs are reported to do OK with cats on the condition they have been raised together.
Mastiffs - Pictures - Learning Abilities
Mastiffs should be exposed to obedience training from an early age. They are rather intelligent and are eager to learn. Some Mastiff owners easily achieve results and stop training sessions too early. Commands should be repeated from time to time to make sure that a Mastiff remembers them. Otherwise, Mastiffs tend to leave some commands unnoticed.
